Hardware—hinges and drawer slides—are often one of the most overlooked, but most used parts of a kitchen. How often do you open and close the cabinet doors and cabinet drawers in your space? Ten times a day? Maybe 20? Good or bad hardware can make or break a kitchen or furniture piece!

When you open a cabinet door or drawer, you can literally feel and sometimes hear the difference between good, quality hardware, and inferior hardware. So when I designed, built and installed the cabinets in our new garage apartment kitchen , the hardware I chose was a major consideration.

Separate the mounting plate from your hinge, place it on the intersection of the two lines you drew, and drill it into place. Use a self-centering drill to make screwholes and attach wooden screws inside. Do this for all the mounting plates. Hold the door in the open position, bring it close to the cabinet, and align the hinge with the mounting place. Then slide the hinge onto the mounting plate with a click.

Open and close the door to make sure the hinges work smoothly and are placed correctly. You can easily install bottom molding on European style cabinets by choosing the right size and kind of molding, marking the area on the cabinet where you want it attached, and attaching the molding using a drill. We also do hinge customizations. You can install overlay cabinet hinges using the European hinge installation method. The tricky part is choosing the right size of cabinet hinge for your cabinets. To do this measure the overlay of your cabinet by subtracting the width of the cabinet opening from the width of the cabinet door and divide that number by 2.

Generally, cabinet doors that are 24 inches tall will need two hinges, each installed 5 inches from the top and bottom. June 20, How to Install Cabinet Hinges. Unscrew the old hinges from the doors. Fill the old screw holes by gluing a small dowel or toothpicks into each hole and trimming the surface flush. After the glue dries completely, sand the area smooth. Finish the area to match the original, or if you are refinishing or painting the entire cabinets and doors, do that now. Filling the old screw holes and redrilling new ones assures a tight fit for the new installation.

Place a hinge temporarily on the front or back of the door, depending on the type of hinge. Align the hinge with the edge of the cabinet door. Align the top and bottom hinges, using a tape measure for accurate spacing.

Mark the position of the hinges by etching through the screw holes with a pencil, awl or small nail. The best deal I found on the hinges were from my favorite hardware source, dlawlesshardware.

They are very reasonable compared to big box stores BUT be sure you order the right thing because returns are a bit more difficult. When they arrived, I realized I had the wrong ones….

Measure your overlay like this: measure the width of your cabinet door, and subtract the width of the cabinet opening. Divide by 2. Paint or stain your cabinets. Align the jig to the edge of the door, mark the center and drill your hole to the depth of the bit. This is the exact size for the hinge to fit in. Be as precise as possible here. And if your existing holes are in a place that may mess up your new holes, fill them!
