It is getting harder and harde to find proper topo maps that a have a usable level of detail b are small enough in size to handle - after all we don't want to have several GB just for one map My attemtps to generate a good topo map from online sources was so far a desaster as the resulting maps are far to big - over 6GB for AU So I went back to source some paper maps available online.
Obviously they are not all up to the latest in terms of tracks, also some have a highe level of deatail than others due to the fact that they have been scanned at different resolutions and that the original might have been of poor quality.

The result are maps of sizes between 90 and about mb for each state. I forgot to set the transparency correct, so sadly the surroundings of the map are not invisible once the map coverage is gone, but unless you want to join the maps into one huge map this does not matter too much.
NZ is still a problem as I was not able to get any suitable maps so far, but I will try to generate a map from Google sources. Only problem here is the zoom level as only from 16 on you will have names for the tracks visible.
So I'll have to find a way to reduce the resulting tiles in both size and color depth - will keep you posted.
